What Is Bag-in-Box?
Bag-in-box is a liquid packaging system formed by placing a flexible inner bag inside a durable outer cardboard carton. The inner bag is in direct contact with the liquid, while the outer carton protects against impact and puncturing during transport and provides the rigidity needed for palletizing and stacking. As the bag empties, it collapses inward, limiting air exposure — this extends shelf life after opening compared with rigid, fixed-volume containers.

PAKKORA's liquid transport bag range is offered in three main formats:
- Bag-in-box carton solution: The inner bag is supplied inside a durable kraft carton fitted with a tap, suitable for bulk shipment on pallets.
- Valved stand-up pouches: Self-standing flexible pouches with a valve or tap spout; can be used without an outer carton for small- to medium-volume products.
- Metallized liquid bags: Bags with a metallized laminate structure that lowers light and oxygen permeability, giving sensitive liquids an extra barrier layer.
Material Options
Liquid transport bags are produced from different film layers such as PE, PET, NY (nylon), and metallized laminate. The number of layers and the material combination determine the balance between the bag's oxygen/moisture barrier, durability, and transparency. Transparent structures allow visual inspection during filling, while metallized layers provide extra protection for light-sensitive products.
Valve and Tap Options
The bag's discharge opening is produced with different valve types depending on how it will be used: a capped fill valve opens and closes with a simple screw cap, while a pull-tab valve system requires the tamper-evident seal to be torn off on first use, giving extra assurance against tampering. A liquid bag-in-box tap valve, in particular, allows repeated, controlled dosing through a tap that protrudes from the carton. The right valve choice depends on the product's viscosity, frequency of use, and end-user profile — whether it's used in-house or by an end consumer.
Aseptic and Non-Aseptic Filling
An aseptic liquid bag is filled and sealed under sterile conditions, allowing it to be stored at room temperature for extended periods without a cold chain; this is common for fruit juice concentrate and some dairy products. Non-aseptic filling does not include this sterilization step and generally requires refrigerated storage or a shorter shelf life. Which method is used depends on the product's own stability and the intended distribution chain.
Which Liquids Is It Used For?
Wine, fruit juice, olive oil and other vegetable oils, dairy products, and various beverage concentrates are the food liquids most commonly packaged in bag-in-box format. Outside the food sector, it is also chosen for medium-volume liquid products such as industrial chemicals and cosmetic raw materials.
Why Bag-in-Box?
Bag-in-box uses less packaging material than rigid bottles or drums and takes up far less space when empty, reducing both production and recycling/waste costs. The bag's collapsible structure limits air ingress as it empties, extending shelf life after opening — a significant advantage for large-volume liquid products that aren't used frequently.
Choosing the Carton Box
The outer carton of a bag-in-box is not just a shipping box — it's a structural component that protects the inner bag from impact and enables stacking on pallets. Because a liquid-filled bag weighs significantly more than the empty carton, the carton's wall construction (single or double wall) should be selected according to the volume being carried; the wall options on the carton box product page can be considered at this stage. In designs where the tap is positioned to protrude from the outside of the carton, it's also important that the tap area is placed where it won't take impact during transport.
Storage Recommendation
Filled bag-in-box products should be stored away from direct sunlight and in an environment without extreme temperature fluctuations, to protect the inner bag's film structure. Bags with taps should be stacked with the valve area always accessible and facing upward; storing them upside down or on their side can lead to leakage at the valve seal over time.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing the wrong valve: Choosing a narrow-opening valve for a high-viscosity liquid unnecessarily lengthens filling and dispensing time.
- Ignoring damage to the outer carton: Even if the inner bag looks intact, a damaged outer carton won't provide adequate impact protection during transport.
- Turning the bag upside down during storage: Storing bags with taps in the wrong orientation can lead to unexpected leakage at the valve area.
