What Is a Container Desiccant?
A container desiccant is a hygroscopic product that absorbs moisture inside a sealed container or carton, preventing condensation, mold and rusting. It's produced in various formats — hanging bags, flat (dual-sheet) pouches, or long strips — and depending on the application can be hung from the container ceiling, wedged between loads, or placed inside cartons.
What Causes "Container Rain"?
Container rain is a common problem in sea freight, caused by the daily temperature swing: as the container heats up during the day, the air inside holds more moisture; when it cools at night, that moisture condenses on the container roof and drips onto the cargo. This risk is most pronounced on long routes with wide temperature swings and for moisture-sensitive cargo such as textiles, electronics, food and metal. A container desiccant prevents this condensation by absorbing ambient moisture at the source.
Desiccant Chemistry: Silica Gel and Calcium Chloride
Two main moisture-absorbing substances are widely used: silica gel and calcium chloride. Silica gel physically traps moisture within its porous structure; once saturated its absorption rate slows, but it carries no risk of liquid leakage. Calcium chloride reacts chemically with moisture and converts it into liquid, typically offering higher absorption capacity — which means that once its capacity is reached, the liquid that collects inside the bag requires leak-proof inner packaging. PAKKORA's container desiccant products are calcium chloride (CaCl₂) based.
Which Cargo Types Are Most at Risk?
Sensitivity to moisture damage varies widely by product category. In textiles and leather goods, moisture can cause permanent staining and musty odors; in electronics and metal components it creates a risk of corrosion and short-circuiting; in food and agricultural products it can lead to mold and spoilage. Desiccant planning should therefore be based on the moisture sensitivity of the specific cargo rather than a one-size-fits-all rule.
Format Options
PAKKORA's container desiccant range is available in three main formats:
- Hanging bag type: Its hook design allows it to be hung easily from the container roof or side wall, taking up no floor space.
- Flat (dual-sheet) type: Its thin, flat profile lets it be wedged inside cartons or between palletized loads.
- Strip type: Made up of several small bags arranged along a strip, providing moisture control spread across a wide area.
Different sizes and weight options make it possible to match the right product to container volume and transit time; higher-capacity products are recommended for larger volumes or longer shipments.
Where Is It Used?
Beyond in-container use, desiccants are also widely used for storing and transporting cartons, pallets, machinery, electronics and metal products. Sea freight container shipments and long-term storage are the scenarios with the highest risk of moisture damage — and therefore where desiccant use is most critical.
Correct Quantity and Placement
The amount of desiccant required depends on container volume, the loading season (shipments loaded at high-humidity ports may need more desiccant) and route duration. Desiccants should be distributed evenly across the points with the highest airflow — the container roof, the door area and the top of the load — rather than piled in a single spot; spreading them out provides more effective moisture control.
Use Alongside Other Cargo Protection Products
Desiccants alone do not constitute a complete moisture management strategy. In a loading arrangement where dunnage bags prevent cargo movement and vacuum packaging cuts off air contact for sensitive products, the desiccant plays a complementary role by controlling the ambient moisture in the remaining space. This becomes even more important for temperature-sensitive cargo using thermal insulation liners, since the insulation cannot vent moisture from the interior.
Safe Use
Desiccant bags typically carry warnings such as "do not consume" or "avoid eye and skin contact"; because these warnings can vary depending on the substance inside the bag, always follow the instructions printed on the packaging. A bag suspected of leaking or being damaged should be replaced without letting it contact the product.
Common Mistakes
- Insufficient quantity: Using too few desiccants for the container volume causes capacity to be exhausted early on long routes.
- Incorrect placement: Piling desiccants in a single corner fails to prevent condensation in other parts of the container.
- Using damaged packaging: A torn or punctured desiccant bag can release the moisture it has absorbed, creating the opposite effect.
