What Is PP Strap Used For?

PP (polypropylene) strap is the most economical bonding band among strapping products. It is the preferred choice for holding together bundles of light and medium-light cardboard boxes, regularly shaped packages, and palletized loads used in short-distance domestic shipments.

Elasticity and Tension Behavior

The most notable characteristic of PP strap is that it retains tension after stretching less effectively than other plastic strapping materials. PP can elongate more than PET, but its tendency to return to its original length after stretching (elastic recovery) is limited. Once stretched, it can loosen permanently over time — which is why PP strap suits short-term, lightweight bundling needs better than long-haul routes or heavy packages expected to settle during transport.

The Difference Between PP Strap and PET Strap

PP and PET are the two strapping materials that most closely resemble each other in appearance; both are made from plastic raw material and supplied in similar roll form. Their behavior, however, differs significantly:

  • Elongation: PP stretches more than PET under tension, giving a more flexible but less controlled feel of tightness at the moment of initial bundling.
  • Tension retention (elastic recovery): PET is markedly better than PP at retaining tension after stretching; PP can develop permanent loosening over time.
  • Joining method: PP's lower melting point compared to PET allows it to be sealed faster with a buckle or heat weld, though joint strength generally falls short of PET's.
  • Cost position: PP is the lower-cost of the two materials; PET offsets this difference with superior tension-retention performance.
  • Typical application: PP is preferred for lightweight, low-value, short-term bundling tasks, while PET is chosen for construction materials, beverage crates, and medium-to-heavy export loads.

In short, PP may be sufficient when the load's value is low and the transport distance is short; if the load is valuable or the journey is long, PET, with its superior tension-retention performance, should be preferred.

  • The most economical option: It has the lowest unit cost among strapping materials.
  • Lightweight: Offers an advantage in handling and shipping weight.
  • Fast application: Its low melting point allows for quick heat-weld sealing.

Joining Method

PP strap is joined either mechanically with a metal or plastic buckle, or by heating and fusing the ends together at low temperature (friction/heat welding). PP's lower melting point compared to PET speeds up this heat-joining process, but the strength of the joint can fall short of the strap itself, so for critical loads it is advisable to check the tightness of the joint.

Applications

Light cardboard box bundles, bundling newspapers and printed materials, low-value textile bales, and regularly shaped light palletized loads are the typical applications for PP strap. It is preferred for short-distance domestic shipments and in-warehouse transport, where simply holding the product together during transit is sufficient and high tension retention is not required.

Points to Consider

  • Not recommended for heavy, sharp-edged, or long-route export loads; the risk of tension loss is higher than with PET or composite strapping.
  • Its low cost does not mean it can replace PET in every application; as load value and transport duration increase, switching to PET or composite strapping is recommended.
  • Prolonged exposure to UV light can further reduce PP's already limited elongation and strength performance.

Common Problems

  • Loosening over time: Because elastic recovery is limited, even if the load settles during transport, the strap cannot compensate for the resulting slack and loosens.
  • Incorrect material selection: Choosing PP for heavy or valuable loads can result in inadequate securing during transport; in such cases, PET or composite strapping should be considered.
  • Brittle joint: If the heat weld does not fully set at low temperature, the joint can fail before the strap itself does.

Storage Recommendation

Like other plastic strapping, PP strap rolls should be stored away from direct sunlight in a dry environment. Rolls exposed to UV light for extended periods can become brittle, which may lead to premature breakage during unwinding and tensioning.
