What Is Steel Strapping Used For?

Steel strapping is a high-tensile-strength securing solution used for the most demanding loads in heavy industry, metals, construction and logistics. It is the preferred choice for securing loads with little tolerance for stretch, such as metal coils, structural profiles, construction materials and heavy machinery parts.

Elasticity and Tension Behavior

The most distinctive property of steel strapping is that it barely stretches at all under tension. This is a major advantage for rigid loads that need to stay perfectly fixed in place. But the same property creates a drawback: if a load settles or compacts slightly in transit, steel strap will not automatically re-tension to take up the slack — unlike polyester (PET) or composite strapping, it shows no elastic recovery. For this reason, periodic tension checks are recommended on long routes.

Advantages

  • Very high tensile strength: Offers the highest absolute breaking strength of any strap type at the same cross-section, compared to plastic strapping.
  • Corrosion resistance: Coated versions offer long service life against moisture and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Rigidity: Provides a secure hold with low risk of cutting even on very heavy, sharp-edged loads that don't change shape (with suitable edge protection).

Joining Method

Steel strapping is joined by threading the ends through a wire buckle (phosphated or galvanized) and crimping or locking it in place with a dedicated strapping tensioner and sealing tool. This is different from the hot melt strapping or plastic buckle methods used with PET and composite strapping — steel strap buckles and tensioning tools cannot be used interchangeably with other strap types.

Application Areas

Automotive sheet metal coils, structural steel profiles, palletized brick and block, log and timber bundles, and heavy machinery parts are the load groups where steel strapping is most commonly used. What these loads have in common is that their shape barely changes during transport, so the strap has no need to stretch.

Points to Watch

  • The cut or broken end of steel strapping is sharp; protective equipment should be worn during cutting and tensioning operations.
  • It is heavier and more tiring to handle by hand over extended use than other strapping materials.
  • It requires strap-specific buckles (wire buckles) and tensioning/sealing tools; these cannot be substituted with PET or composite strapping equipment.
  • On steel strap with a scratched or damaged coating, corrosion starts at that point first; regular inspection is recommended during long-term outdoor storage.

Common Issues

  • Loosening: Because there is no elastic recovery, the strap loosens as the load settles; this can go unnoticed on long routes if interim checks aren't carried out.
  • Incorrect seal/buckle application: Improper closing of the wire buckle can lead to sudden joint failure during transport.
  • Edge cutting: Steel strapping tensioned without edge protectors can cut into cardboard or wooden surfaces with its sharp edge.

Storage Recommendation

Even coated steel strap coils should be stored indoors, away from moisture, before use. While surface moisture staining on the outer wrap of a coil may not affect the strap's appearance, coils left in humid conditions for extended periods can develop early corrosion in their inner layers.
